v3.5

Version 3.5 of BlogSoft is out of the door, after 4 months working 24/7 finishing it up between server crashes and scaling troubles. So I'm tired, but it's there. It's not perfect, but it's a hell of lot better than the previous version.

This time around we will use all our energy to remove all the bugs before we even think about new features. We learnt that the hard way the last time. We've squashed 9 bugs today already. One of them was a mean badass that caused all kinds of trouble. We nailed him after a 10 hours mad hunt.

We now power the 19th largest site in Sweden (stats at the bottom). Damn. I remember thinking that I would be happy if 100 users or so signed up. Now we get around 1k each day. It's been a strange ride.

I'll go to bed now. Been working for 17 hours straight. It's a new day tomorrow.

Peace...

It Doesn't Take an Einstein to Realize Why Microsoft Is Headed Down and Google Is Headed Up

"You'll notice, for example, that I didn't include Sun in my list of vital companies. That's not so much because Sun can be defined in terms of the others but that Sun is simply doomed. Their software isn't better, their hardware isn't better, and they can't see themselves as anything but a maker of hardware or software, so my simple recommendation is that they take the rest of their cash and try entering a hot new field like -- say -- space flight. Or making really fine cakes. The world will always need fine baked goods. Or just give it back to the shareholders. Really"

Spolsky: "If you're doing things for one customer, you've either got a loose cannon sales person, or you're slipping dangerously down the slope towards consultingware. And there's nothing wrong with consultingware; it's a very comfortable slope to slip down, but it's just not as profitable as shrinkwrap software"

Oooops....

Years in prison: 12.5 Potential fine: £2000...

Arghh...

Instead of spending thousands of hours coding my brains out, why didn't I think of this? Hope he makes the 1M mark though. Lucky bastard :)

Web 2.0

Dave doesn't like the web 2.0 meme. Neither do I. I think he's right on the spot with this one.

People choose the products they buy - apart from price - for three reasons:

- How they see themselves
- How they want to see themselves
- How they want to be seen

Bloggrevyen is UP!

After a too long downtime, Bloggrevyen, our popular pinging service for norwegian weblogs is alive and kicking. It's got a facelift, and we have more improvements planned for the nearest future. We've also fixed a couple of bugs related to different charsets in the RSS feeds.

It might be some snags here and there, because the system has just been moved from windows to linux.

Anyways, enjoy :)

BlogSoft - BackStage

Very little blogging lately, but too much work. Here's a sneak peak behind the curtains at BlogSoft while we're doing some maintenance work :) (Norwegian)

No EU software patents

Great news, the European Parliament didn't pass the software patents bill!

No Software Patents

nosoftwarepatents.com: "The mind has always been sacrosanct. The claim that intellectual processes and logical procedures (that do not primarily manipulate devices) can be possessed and monopolized extends greed and avarice much too far."

Microsoft gets blogging?

Scoble: "More than 15 million spaces have been created since opening in December. 15 million!"

With integrated ads for spaces on MSN messenger, IMHO that's as impressing as dumping 150 billion fake dollar bills over NYC and 15 million of them get picked up.

I still haven't stumbled upon one single spaces site. And I'm quite a bit around.

Sig on Taxonomies

Sig has a great roundup on tags. I find it "hard" to explain why tags are good and hierarchical structures are bad. Sig obviously doesn't ;)

Avoiding Div Mania

JuicyStudio:  "More and more web documents are appearing that consist of nothing more than a collection of div elements. In most cases, better use of CSS selectors could be used to avoid overusing the div element"

Paint Magic

It really strikes me, how much effect a good old paintjob can have. Take a look at the new 787 Dreamliner from Boeing. The actual shape of the aircraft is very similar to what we are used to seeing. But it's painted and decorated in a way that it gets the shape as a bird. I can even see a concorde in there. Almost.

A Gamers Manifesto: "Did you remember when you were a kid and you got bored on weekends, how you would go to a large building, a hotel or a hospital, then wander around for several hours looking for a certain room? While zombies attacked you? Neither do we. That's because, much to the surprise of FPS game makers everywhere, wandering around lost in hallways isn't fun."
